Venture Outdoors

Venture Outdoors in a nonprofit organization working to get people active in the outdoors in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

We do this through public programs and private group outings, and through our kayak rental concession, Kayak Pittsburgh, and climbing wall business, Climb Pittsburgh. But this is just the tip of the iceberg, to find out more about everything we do visit, www.ventureoutdoors.org!

Our goal is simple, we want to make it easy to get outside, but our mission is much bigger – we work to encourage everyone to participate in outdoor recreational activities, and by doing this we promote Pittsburgh’s unique natural amenities, highlights the region’s excellent quality of life, fosters a greater appreciation for the environment, inspires an active lifestyle and creates a shared sense of community.

We’re holding two events during the 6 week celebration of World Environment Day. Our second event is the Tenth Annual Venture Outdoors Festival on Saturday, May 22. The 2010 Venture Outdoors Festival is a free one-day outdoor extravaganza celebrating the region’s outdoor recreation activities. On Saturday, May 22 Point State Park and the Mon Warf will be filled with activities and organizations making it the easiest way to get involved in the outdoors!

My husband and I would like to participate in the Paddle at the Point, and while registration is free, we are concerned about the cost of Parking. Also, we’re not from the area, will parking be close to the put-in point?

    Thanks.

  2. Donna Fry says:

I am registered for 6/5 at the Point. Do I need to register again on that day? I was planning on putting in up river and paddling down, but I don’t want to miss anything by not following your schedule.
    Thanks

  3. Kelly says:

I paid for a season pass to kayak. Can I use that pass to cover the cost for Paddle at the Point Day?

  4. admin says:

    Kelly,
Venture Outdoors is working with nearly a dozen canoe and kayak outfitters to make boats available for rent. Rental fees are being paid directly to these outfitters for use of their boats. Since this isn’t a Kayak Pittsburgh event, Season Pass holders must still pay the fee.

    Hi Donna,
You do not need to register again on the day of the record attempt but it would help us if you use the Mon Wharf so that we can check you in (as simple as checking your name on a roster). This will help us to get an accurate count for the record attempt.

    Hi Macy,
Parking is free at the two locations where we have made arrangements. If you are bringing your own boat, we strongly recommend parking at the Monongahela Wharf. It’s a short carry from your car to the river’s edge. Parking is free. Venture Outdoors staff and volunteers will be there to help get everyone checked in and on the water on time.

If you are renting a boat, please park in Heinz Field Lot 1 or 2. Parking is free. Click here for directions. Meet up with us at the ramp near the new Fred Rogers Memorial that leads from the open end of Heinz Field into the water. Venture Outdoors staff and volunteers will be there to check you in and help you get your boat and other gear and get on the water on time.

  8. Paul says:

    Dear admin,
My boat is a $1200 NMMA Certified Sea-Eagle Kayak. The hull is 1000 Denier reinforced inflatable suitable for up to class IV whitewater. May I be able to participate with my boat?
    Paul

  9. admin says:

Hi Paul, I’m sorry, but the Guinness Rules for this record attempt specify that boats must be hard-hulled canoes or kayaks, not inflatables. If you’d still like to participate, you can rent a canoe through us.

Thank you SO much to all who organized the World Record event. It was the best fun I have had this summer. Let’s do it again! How about a world record attempt at the longest line of kayaks and canoes end to end? It could happen. Ignoring the rain, after the paddle I rode on the Just Ducky Tours and had a wonderful guide whom had a lot of interesting facts about Pittsburgh that I never knew despite being raised not far from the city. The Arts Festival was promising but I didn’t stay long due to the lightning. Venture Outdoors rocks, Pittsburgh rocks, and again thank you for such a lovely day out. I will definitely recommend Venture Outdoors to everyone!
